Educational Program

Upon acceptance into SECY’s program, students are tested to determine their academic strengths and weaknesses.  The findings are used to construct an individual and group tutoring study plan in order to bring each child’s performance up to grade level.  SECY purposefully maintains a small teacher-student ratio of 1 to 15, which allows for individual attention and assistance. Teaching methods include individual and group tutoring sessions, as well computer use to develop computer and internet literacy.  The academic component is designed to provide a smoother transition between elementary school and high school.

Evaluation is a large component in the academic process.  Students are required to bring in all report cards for the staff to review and aid in determining academic progress.  For those students involved in the Special Education Program, SECY receives copies of their Individual Education Plan to ensure that the students’ academic and personal improvement plans correlate with what the student is doing at school.  While the general progress of each student is reviewed throughout the school year, SECY staff conducts an intensive assessment of each student’s improvement in the areas of academics, behavior and attitude, and interpersonal skills on an annual basis.  Based on these assessments, individual education plans may be modified in order to be more conducive to the student’s needs and inspire greater improvement.

Studies have shown that after-school programs are extremely beneficial for academic success.  Good programs result in improved performance by the child, higher test scores, increased self-esteem, and the prevention of unhealthy after-school activities.
