Character Development
SECY philosophy is that character development is essential to academic achievement. Development of the character includes among other things interpersonal and proactive social skills and decision making. Research in the field proves that a balanced focus on academic and personal skill development makeup a quality after-school program, which is vital to the growth of healthy, well-balanced children. By involving children in organized, educational, fun activities, the probability of involvement in detrimental actions is lessened. Studies have shown that most negative behavior occurs during the unsupervised after-school hours; time that could be used proactively. School years are the indispensable time to help children develop critical thinking skills in order for them to grow into healthy, responsible adults. In certain cases of behavior problems or difficulty in the classroom, SECY’s director, upon parent’s approval, will meet with the child’s school teacher to discuss ways in which the Center can assist with developing techniques to address and deal with the problem.
